La Ronge, Sask. making progress on limiting alcohol sales

Progress is being made on limiting alcohol sales in La Ronge but more work needs to be done before the new rules can be applied. File / Global News

Saskatchewan’s deputy minister of corrections and policing says progress has been made on proposed liquor regulations for the La Ronge area, but much more needs to be done.

Dale McFee said a meeting was held earlier this month involving representatives from his department, government relations, Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming and the Town of La Ronge.

Town councillors voted last year to accept more than two dozen recommendations from the Northern Alcohol Strategy in principle, but wanted more time consider cutting the number of hours alcohol was sold.

Councillors voted five-to-two in January in favour of developing new rules that would limit liquor sales on certain days and cut back on the hours when alcohol can be sold.

The province said it is examining what the town can implement through zoning or business bylaws under the Northern Municipalities Act, as well as what can be legally implemented under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act.
